Tips for Capturing Professional Child Portraits

Photographing children is one of the most rewarding and joy-filled parts of my work—and also one of the most unpredictable! As a photographer who specializes in newborns, families, and little personalities, I’ve learned that getting great child portraits is all about connection, patience, and a sprinkle of creativity.

Whether you’re a parent looking to improve your everyday snaps or a fellow photographer refining your child portrait sessions, here are my top tips for capturing professional-looking child portraits that feel natural, joyful, and timeless.

1. Set the Scene, But Stay Flexible

Kids thrive in spaces where they feel comfortable and safe. I always recommend choosing a location they enjoy—whether it’s your home, a sunlit park, a cozy studio, or even their own backyard.

That said, flexibility is everything. Children don’t always follow our timelines or ideas, and that’s okay! Some of the best portraits come when we lean into their curiosity and spontaneity.

2. Use Natural Light Whenever Possible

Soft, natural light is a child portrait photographer’s best friend. It flatters young skin, brings out eye sparkle, and creates an airy, timeless feel.

I love shooting indoors using my large shoot-through umbrella—it gives me soft, even lighting that’s perfect for little ones. At home, try placing your child near a big window or even in the open doorway to take advantage of gentle, natural light.

Outdoors, shaded areas can work beautifully, even in the middle of the day. And of course, heading outside just before sunset (golden hour) offers that warm, dreamy glow we all love.

✨ Avoid harsh direct light when you can—it creates unflattering shadows and lots of squinting.

3. Keep It Fun (Seriously!)

Don't be afraid to play, joke around, or ask silly questions. If they have a favorite family member, ask them to help. Sometimes big sisters/brothers are the best help in getting those smiles. That’s when you get the real giggles and true expressions that parents love most sometimes.

Bring a favorite toy, let them dance, or use bubbles. Most kids love bubbles!

4. Get Down on Their Level

Kneel, sit, or even lay on the ground—whatever it takes to see the world from their perspective.

Shooting at eye level creates more engaging, connected portraits and helps highlight their unique personality.

5. Focus on the Eyes

The eyes are the heart of any portrait. Always lock your focus there, especially if you’re using a shallow depth of field.

It brings clarity and emotion into the photo, and it’s often what people notice first.

6. Patience Is Everything

Kids are unpredictable, and that’s okay. If a child is shy, tired, or having a moment, don’t push through—pause. Let them reset. Some of my best portraits have come after a quick break or snack.

Creating a calm, pressure-free environment allows their real personality to shine through.

7. Let the Imperfections Shine

That untamed curl, the scraped knee, or the missing front tooth? Capture it.

These are the details that make childhood magical. Years from now, those “imperfections” will be the most nostalgic parts of your portraits.
